Ethnic Studies is a social science sub-discipline that studies race, ethnicity, and indigeneity. It analyses how race and ethnicity were and continues to be a powerful social, cultural and political force. Ethnic Studies is a critical and interdisciplinary program that draws from disciplines like anthropology, sociology, history, English, art history, communications, and political science. It looks at the differences between different ethnic groups around the world. The goal of an Ethnic Studies program is to examine relations between racial and ethnic groups and how they intersect with class, gender, and sexuality at personal and collective levels.

Ethnic Studies courses allow students to understand the different historical movements for social transformation, resistance, and liberation. The subject provides in-depth knowledge about the cultural heritage, political issues, language, and identity of various ethnic groups. The model curriculum covers topics like race and racism, structural violence, colonialism, discrimination, assimilation, and revolution.

Students pursuing a degree in Ethnic Studies will not only gain theoretical knowledge but also the ability to apply what they have learned to real-world problems. They will be able to examine historical racial-ethnic conflicts and analyze the strategies used to solve such issues. Students will develop the capability to work with people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds and to understand the challenges faced in multi-ethnic societies. They will also gain valuable research, writing, analysis, critical thinking, and cultural awareness skills.
