An auto repair technician or automotive service technician is one who inspects, repairs, and maintains electric, hybrid, gas, and alternative fuel vehicles. This work requires technical qualifications in the fields of Auto Body Repair and Automotive Service. Depending on the business, and Auto Service Technician may work for full range repair or specialise in certain areas including air conditioning systems, brakes, or transmissions. These technicians perform routine checks and regularly provide service to vehicles. It is an Auto Service Technician's work to diagnose malfunctioning vehicles, detect technical issues, identify options that work for repair or modification, and find required solutions.

In addition, the duties of an Auto Service Technician include, identifying mechanical problems, testing systems and parts using computerised diagnostic equipment, following checklists, lubricating vehicle components, and engine, tire rotations, tune-ups, replacing worn parts, wheel bearings, disassembling and reassembling parts, and clarifying client doubts. Though Auto Service Technicians work on traditional mechanical components, they are expected to familiarise themselves with the evolving trends and electronic systems. Steering systems, braking, and transmission are primarily controlled by electronic components and computers. Accident-avoidance sensors are also electronically integrated.
